I Appreciate How You…

“Meanwhile…” No, this is not a Stephen Colbert bit. but…

But despite everything that's going on, meanwhile, human neurophysiology has not changed. The human reaction to toxic stress has not changed. It is still harmful to people and to results both short and long term.

Scare people and create fear-based systems and structures, and they perform poorly. But respect and fundamentally care for people and they perform better.  

Qualtrics, the global leader in data solutions, points this out.

They say, “According to our research, only 20% of employees who feel they don’t belong are engaged, versus 91% of those who feel they do – that’s three and a half times more.” They confirm the benefits of engagement as better customer experience, higher productivity, and greater retention, all fundamental and critical business objectives that no leader in their right mind would undermine!

The 30 Minute Belonging Boost

Your consistent efforts to create belonging for your team members makes a big difference. Here's a new simple activity to try. I call it, “The 30 Minute Belonging Boost.” This is an adaptation of the Appreciation Palooza I shared last summer. 

But instead of recognizing a team member’s tactical contributions, this activity gives attention to who they are and the qualities or strengths they consistently contribute. Some examples are dependability, analytical insights, curiosity, humor, thoughtfulness, collaboration, connecting the dots, warmth, listening, etc.

To use the 30 Minute Belonging Boost, do these simple steps. And remember, this is designed to be quick!

  1. Block 30 minutes on your calendar and set a timer.

  2. Open an email for each of your direct reports.

  3. Subject line: I appreciate you

  4. Copy, paste, and complete this short statement for each team member, customizing it authentically.

“Hi ____,

As we head into this week, I want to take a moment to let you know how much I appreciate your [name a specific quality, ability, or strength.] I’ve noticed how this really helps us to [name the positive impact].

Thank you for bringing this strength to our team; it really makes a difference! I hope you have a great week.

With appreciation…”
